Justin Bua

Artist Biography

Back to Art, Prints & Posters Collection
Justin Bua

When asked to define the artistic style featured in his best-selling art, prints, and posters, Justin Bua describes it as a "visually distorted expression of my childhood memories." Born in NYC's untamed upper-west side, he was fascinated early on by the raw, visceral Manhattan street life and found himself spending most of his time hanging out at places like Rock Steady Park and the Douglas Projects. Bua attended the High School of Music and Performing Arts where he studied visual art, then earned a scholarship to Art Center College of Design in Pasadena California where he earned his B.F.A in Illustration.

For the last ten years, Justin Bua has been making a mark in the art world with his combination of graffiti-esque style, distorted realism and urban themes; his art, prints and posters are strongly influenced by the components of hip hop culture. Bua began his art career by doing slick bottom paintings for skateboards. His work can be seen on many CD covers and in advertisements for companies such as Nike. He also created the animated opening sequence for "The Lyricist Lounge Show" on MTV.

Today, in addition to his painting, Justin Bua teaches Figure Drawing for Animation at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. His line of art, prints and posters is currently the number one selling living artist among college students. However, his energetic and vocal fan base extends past high school skateboarders and college students to reach across the globe to celebrities like President Clinton, Robert De Niro and Christina Ricci.
