No longer the swollen aggressive bulls of September, the bull elk are now sedate and social animals. Often found in groups of a dozen or more, these bulls are at a low point in their life cycle. They gather here to take advantage of the rich low country food sources as they run a frantic race with winter to restore weight and energies lost over the past few months of their rut. Even when thin and tired, or perhaps suffering from injuries sustained in battle last fall, they are usually capable and dangerous opponents. If the wolves are going to eat, they are going to have to act as a team.
