Owen J Gromme - Ruffed Grouse
BR>On my son's tree farm at the edge of a swale among the birches is a place where very often we put up or jump ruffed grouse. Ecologically, this is an ideal one for this bird.
Grouse are gallinaceous birds. Like chickens, turkeys, pheasants and quail, they nest on the ground and fly only short distances.
I have a great sense of responsibility toward any painting I do. This prompts me to strive for an anatomically and environmentally accurate portrayal of the bird or animal I am painting. Who knows? Maybe someday thousands of years from now one of my paintings will be found stored away some place, the only existing record of what a particular bird or animal looked like. It is possible. But even if that never happens, I feel a deep responsibility to show nature as it really is. Thus, I study and re-study light and musculature and habitat so that every one of my paintings will stand up before the scrutiny of knowledgeable people.
In painting these three ruffed grouse, I begin by sketching roughly. But once the overall composition is planned, each bird must have the proper proportions. Its position must be natural. The light hitting it must bring out the colors and musculature which I know are there, even if my viewers do not. It has taken me a lifetime o develop these techniques, and I am still working on them.
Ruffed Grouse is published in a edition of 500 prints. Each print is embossed with a detail from the painting to signify that it is a Gromme Master Print and that Own Gromme reviewed and approved the print before he hand signed it.
Ruffed Grouse is printed on the finest 100% rag, acid free, neutral pH paper from Rising Paper Company. The paper protecting the face of the print, as well as the envelope enclosing the print, is of the same archival nature.
