Owen J Gromme - Early Nester - Great Horned Owl
The wintry sun just beginning to burn its way through the cold morning mist is testament to the frigid day when I did the studie for this painting, I was located in a photographic blind, too far away to get any good pictures, but I watched with interest as the brooding bird rose for a moment to turn her eggs over. Tucked away in my blind, I made mental notes which I later provided the basis for this painting.
The great horned owl is one of the earliest nesting birds in Wisconsin. They lay their eggs early in the spring, sometimes as early as February, and must attend to them very carefully in order to prevent their freezing. Situated high in a pine tree, her nest rimmed with snow, this female owl maintains a cold, lonrly vigil to the continuation of her specis as the sun shines dimly through the haze.
Early Nester - Great Horned Ow is published in a edition of 500 prints. Each print is embossed with a detail from the painting to signify that it is a Gromme Master Print and that Own Gromme reviewed and approved the print before he hand signed it.
Early Nester - Great Horned Ow is printed on the finest 100% rag, acid free, neutral pH paper from Rising Paper Company. The paper protecting the face of the print, as well as the envelope enclosing the print, is of the same archival nature.
