Whitetail bucks rarely fight seriously because they mostly behave like teenage boys and for much of the year hang out together. Like boys, they test each other by sparring. Sparring is a semi-serious game of mock warfare that bucks play to determine who is tougher. When the rut arrives, most bucks understand where they stand in the pecking order. But a buck may forget his place when a bigger comrade interrupts him while he chases a willing doe. Or he decides to determine, once and for all, who's really the toughest with a buck he's sparred evenly with before. Worse yet, a strange buck wanders into his turf. Then the fighting turns deadly serious and the whitetail with the biggest rack, strongest body and superior genes wins the day.
