about this piece
Historic Haig Point Lighthouse was built in 1873 to assist navigation through the mile wide Calibogue Sound. Consisting of a house with a tower above, the structure, costing $7600 to build, was fully restored by International Paper Corporation in 1986. It now serves as a guest house for members and guests of Haig Point property owners. This aspect also includes Haig Point Dock and reception building and seen at the pier is the water taxi which gives access to and from Hilton Head Island.
The view, painted from the direction of Harbourtown on a clear moonlit night, also features one of the many shrimpboats that constantly ply the sound spreading its array of gear as it prepares to set out nets. I've also taken the liberty of switching on the lighthouse beam, no longer used, to show it in its former glory.
