The harpy eagle is one of the most magnificent eagles in the world. It is also one of the most endangered. It's hard to imagine the size of this bird. Its huge talons can puncture a man's lung and snatch a monkey or sloth from a tree without pausing in its flight. A native of the rainforest canopy, this striking bird's range is being reduced as encroachment on the rainforest continues to take its toll. To impart a sense of the harpy's impressive size, the bird's image fills a portion of my painting, with parts of the bird going off the edges. I was intrigued with the idea of painting the harpy - with its monochromatic plumage of greys and blacks - on a nearly black background to present the harpy in a tone-on-tone setting. One organization currently studying the harpy eagle in its Central and South American ranges is The Peregrine Fund, Inc., which had its World Center for Birds of Prey in Boise, Idaho. Through their efforts, it is hoped that they harpy will be reintroduced into suitable areas. I was fortunate enough to visit one of the Peregrine Fund's research sites in the rainforest area of Tikal, Guatemala, and see the harpy's habitat firsthand. The bird I've painted is a captive harpy who resides with The Peregrine Fund. She was named Freedom at the Mill Pond Press 1993 Artist/Dealer Workshop. I'm sure this harpy will be painted many times, and I hope that she will become a symbol of efforts to preserve our fragile rainforest. - Seerey-Lester
