Today's Pintos are descendents of the horses brought to the Southwest in the sixteen hundreds by the Spanish Conquistadors. They were the very first horses in North America. Reproducing in wild herds, they were called mustangs. Today, the Pinto is called a 'Paint' if it's a pure-bred Quarter Horse.
Pintos were highly prized by the American Indians. They loved color and decoration and did not hesitate to paint their bodies as well as their horses. The interesting camouflage pattern was recognized as a benefit while buffalo hunting.
