about this piece
On November 29, 1864, the Colorado Cavalry set out to teach the Cheyenne Indians a lesson in their winter camp at Sand Creek. What is now known as the Sand Creek Massacre aroused the Cheyenne and sent them boiling all over the plains, eager for revenge. Joining the Sioux and Arapaho, they raided and plundered over a distance of 400 miles, attacking trains, burning ranches, ripping out telegraph lines and attacking wagon trains and posts along the Santa Fe Trail.
Depicted here, the hostiles have surprised a train at a vulnerable point along the route just as it is about to stop for much needed water. The Indians sometimes shot the tank full of holes to let the water run out or they set fire to the wood supports and toppled the tank.
