about this piece
Mickey Mouse was created in 1928 to replace Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, a character
created by Walt Disney for Universal Studios. When Disney asked for a larger budget,
Universal subsequently announced they had hired the bulk of his staff and offered
Disney the opportunity to keep doing the Oswald series, as long as he agreed to a
budget cut and went on the payroll. Disney refused the deal, left Universal, and went
on to create the most famous mouse in the world.
This risk taking spirit is evident in David Garibaldi's Street Mouse. In this piece, Mr. Garibaldi masterfully executes his urban style in order to add a defiant sense to Mickey Mouse, a character regarded as the cartoon standard for conformity and order, but whose creation was fraught with a bold rebelliousness that changed the entire world.
