Artist Biography

Susan Friedman

Susan Friedman has a BA in Literature from the University of Buffalo and a MA in Film and Photography from the San Francisco Art Institute. She has won a Grammy for her documentary film on MC Hammer and Rap Culture in Oakland, a National Endowment for the Arts Grant for her documentary, "Ki ho alu That's Slack Key Guitar".

She feels strongly that an artist must do everything possible to give voice to what moves them. Her work has gone from documentary film to photography and experimenting with alternative techniques. She has utilized the platinum/palladium printing process in an intriguing series of florals, creating art, prints and posters that will not fade.

Her most recent art, prints and posters are color digital photographs of birds, nests and fish, printed with archival inks and combined with paint, glazes and wax, then mounted on wood. Her work can be found in the Smithsonian Institute, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and she has shown in noted galleries in the US and Europe.
