Russ Vickers

Russ Vickers was born the son of a horse trader in 1923 in Texas. He saw action in the U. S. Marine Corps in World War II. During the Korean War he served as a combat artist. Subsequently, he worked as a technical illustrator for the aerospace industry in Los Angeles for twenty years.

Vickers had little formal art training, but took the correspondence course from the Famous Artists School in 1970. Thereafter, he began showing his art, prints and posters in Sedona. He was a realist painter of Civil War and western scenes. One of his paintings served as the opening shot for the John Wayne movie "Chisum” and others were used in the closing credits.

He moved to Tempe, Arizona in 1973 and dedicated himself full-time to painting art, prints and posters. He lived there until his death in 1997.
