Born in France in 1912, Robert Doisneau is best known for his art, prints and posters of 35mm photos that captured the humor and pathos of daily life in the streets of Paris.
In the 1930's he worked as an industrial photographer for Renault and did other commercial art, prints and posters. After the Second World War he concentrated on photojournalism.
He loved the chance juxtapositions that comment on life and he was quoted as saying "The marvels of daily life are exciting; no movie director can arrange the unexpected that you find in the street.” His search for "the unimaginable image” can be seen in both his photojournalism, art, prints, posters, and his portraits of other artists.
