Pierre Auguste Cot

Pierre Auguste Cot (1837-1883) was a French painter who created several art, prints and posters of lasting popularity, including Les Printemps, featuring two young lovers sitting upon a swing, and The Storm. Both these paintings have been on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City; The Storm belongs to the museum while Les Primtemps is owned privately. A number of his paintings are in the collection of The Louvre in Paris.

Cot made his debut at the Salon of 1863 in Paris. He then developed a successful career as a portrait painter favored by the Parisian aristocracy. He also studied classical antiquity and mythology and worked in the tradition of Romantic art, prints and posters.

Cot also was renowned for his portraits, which made up the majority of his art, prints and posters. The more enduring figurative work, such as The Storm, is comparatively rare.
