Artist Biography

Daryl Poulin

Daryl Poulin painted abstract art, prints and posters before dedicating himself to the excitement of studying and painting the West. Although he says he's just begun, his focus is intact. "Every painting I've done has a horse in it,' he says. "Every animal or person in my paintings is a real, live animal or person.' Poulin paints more than the West as it's traditionally known. He paints the West as it is today. "I want to depict the contemporary as it really is,' he says. "I'm filtering an old subject through current sensibilities.'

A painter of cowboy and Indian and other western subjects, he was born and raised in Maine, was in Korea with the Army in the late 1960s, and then studied painting art, prints and posters for two years at the Art Institute of Chicago. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in graphic design from the Portland Maine School of Art.

Following a career in commercial art in Wisconsin and South Dakota, he began painting art, prints and posters in his spare time. His first painting sold to actress Melanie Griffith. In 1993, he created the commemorative print for the 75th anniversary of the Buffalo Bill Cody Stampede.
