Albert Swayhoover

Artist Biography

Albert Swayhoover

The serene, coastal landscapes of Albert Swayhoover's art, prints and posters blend a contemporary feel for color and light with a more traditional, impressionistic style. He manipulates his chosen medium of oil with palette knives, occasionally using a brush for the finer details. It is difficult to imagine that delicate beach grasses as well as fierce storm clouds are all achieved using quick strokes with the edge of a knife. He notes, "I can achieve painterly surfaces without the fussiness of brush strokes. Colors stay vibrant and shapes stay crisp.'

Born in New York City, he attended the State University of New York at Farmingdale and the School of Visual Arts, but pursued a career in advertising because he did not feel a career as a fine artist would provide enough financial stability for a young family. He is self-taught as a fine artist and only after some years did he study drawing at the Art Students League in New York. Finally, after he retired as Art Director and owner of his own advertising agency, he became a full-time painter of art, prints and posters.

His numerous awards include the Solomon R. Guggenheim Award given by the Salmagundi Club, and many one-man shows throughout the United States. His art, prints and posters hang in many American private and corporate collections including IBM, Chase Manhattan Bank, and CBS. He is a member of the American Society of Marine Artists.
