Terry Redlin

Born Terry Avon Redlin on July 11, 1937, Terry Redlin's tremendous love and appreciation for nature and the wonder of the world around him was fostered from a very young age. Raised in the small town of Watertown, South Dakota, Redlin had a simple childhood.

"I'm a small town boy. Always was. Always will be, said Redlin. 'All I ever wanted to do was hunt and fish and wander in the woods. Nature was my favorite teacher."

Redlin's interest in art also began early on in his young life; yet, it was following a tragic accident at the age of 15 that Redlin fully devoted himself to the craft. After being hit by a drunk driver while riding a motorcycle on the way to his job as an usher at a local theater, Redlin's leg was crushed and had to be amputated. 'I decided I better get serious about something,' he recalls. And art, I knew I could still do.'

Terry Redlin earned his college degree from St. Paul School of Associated Arts in St. Paul, Minnesota, and was married at the age of 19 to Helen Langenfeld. Redlin went on to spend several decades working in the commercial art industry as a graphic designer, illustrator, layout artist and art director. All the while, he was perfecting his own personal style, including his spectacular use of light and incredible ability to capture life and the world around him in its simplest and most beautiful forms.

Redlin sold his first two prints for $10 each in 1977. It was around this time that he left his job in commercial art to devote himself full time to his own work. One of the most widely collected modern painters today, Terry Redlin has garnered numerous prestigious awards and recognitions throughout his exceptional career, including being named America's Most Popular Artist in annual gallery surveys conducted by U.S. Art magazine from 1991 through 1998.

Today, Terry Redlin, as well as his legacy as an artist, continues to live on at the Redlin Art Center in his hometown of Watertown, South Dakota. Designed by his son, Charles Redlin, the visually stunning center houses more than 150 Terry Redlin originals, as well as a museum dedicated to the life of one of America's most celebrated artists.

'I remember the stories told around the kitchen table and the evening campfires. I dream about those long ago times and attempt to re-create them as truly as memory and imagination will allow,' says Redlin. 'The beautiful outdoors and the many memories of my childhood is what continues to fascinate me.'
