Alex Ross

The recent success of fantasy movies like Captain America, Green Lantern, Iron Man, and The Avengers has brought about a renewed interest in comic book art. Alex Ross is one of the pre-eminent comic book artists of the modern era. Born into an artistic family (mom was a commercial artist and grandpa designed toys), Ross had debuted his artistic bent by age three when he drew his own rendition of a commercial he had seen on TV. A few years later, he saw Superman on TV and he was captivated.

Eventually, he spent three years at the American Academy of Art in Chicago honing his style, which many describe as a cross between Norman Rockwell and George Perez. He quickly moved into the comic book world, doing work for both Marvel and DC Comics. Ross's work is careful and precise and as a result, takes quite a bit of time. In light of this, he does primarily cover design and feature art.

Ross counts M. Night Shyamalan as a fan and collaborated with him on the movie Unbreakable. He has also done costume design, TV Guide covers, a special piece for the Academy Awards, and a wide variety of other work. He has won the CBG Fan Awards "Favorite Painter" prize so many times that they have had to retire the award. The Norman Rockwell Museum played host to his first solo exhibition, including a special tribute to Rockwell by Ross. Alex Ross is one of the premiere comic book artists at work today and we are excited to offer a collection of his fine art prints in our online gallery.
