The Apaches were the last of the southwestern tribes to resist the encroach-ment of the white man. According to Apache beliefs, the owl was a symbol of foreboding and death. When a village was struck by pestilence, mud effgies of the owl would be placed on the trail to warn travelers away. Here we see a war party of western Apache returning to find such a warning.
