about this piece
As winter begins to set in, large groups of eagles congregate in certain areas, particularly in the northwest, where several can be seen roosting in one tree. Feeding mainly on fish, the eagles find the picking especially good, for the Pacific salmon are on the final run of their upstream spawn. Bald eagles are actually quite skilled at catching fish, and the weak, spawned out salmon make an easy meal for many.
Bald eagles were formerly found throughout North America, near coastal as well as inland waters, but their numbers were greatly reduced by human encroachment and the pollution of inland waters. Luckily, protective efforts taken in recent years have allowed the bald eagle to once again flourish. The sight of so many eagles together is impressive . . . to destroy that would be a tragedy.
