about this piece
It is early winter in the Cascades of the Pacific Northwest and the weather has grown unpredictable, one minute clear visibility for miles and the next minute nothing but white as a wet mist and snow envelops the rugged terrain. Out of nowhere appears the king of the crags, bounding effortlessly over impossible footholds on the sheer mountain ridges. With short legs and wide split hooves, the mountain goat enjoys complete mobility and amazing sense of balance. Their coats of long, hollow fur are beginning to thicken in preparation for the harsh winter ahead. When most mountain mammals move to the lower valleys, the mountain goat heads upward to the high, windswept cliffs where the snow blows off almost as quickly as it falls. As would be expected in this most inhospitable environment, the mountain goat has few natural enemies, for indeed there are not many intruders into the High Society.
