In the whitetail hierachy of senses, the nose is the radar that is always most trusted. The measures that hunters take to defeat a buck's sense of smell are epic... special soaps, cover scents, odor eliminating sprays... However, it's arguable whether any of these extraordinary measures are worth the effort. The most successful hunters know the only way to harvest a trophy buck is to have the wind in their favor. While all deer rely on their nose to some degree, the mature buck rarely moves unless the wind is perfect for him. Scent checking for danger, a trophy whitetail freezes when he detects a foreign odor. Once the buck locates the source of danger he immediately heads for cover, trusting the sense that has allowed him to reach maturity.
