about this piece
In this epic work of bold colors and speeding brush strokes, LeRoy Neiman captures the historic victory of The 1970 America's Cup, Intrepid vs Gretel II. The Intrepid triumph maintained the United States hold on the America's Cup, unbroken for over one hundred and nineteen years.
The oldest, most distinguished trophy in world sport, the holy grail of yacht racing, the first AMERICA'S CUP took place in 1851. For 132 years (1851 - 1983) the US held the longest winning streak in the history of the race. LeRoy Neiman has attended many of the America's Cup challenge races to sketch live, including 'Spectators Fleet - America's Cup', 1978 and 'America's Cup - Australia', 1986.
In this spectacular serigraph the challenge of these two sleek vessels comes alive in a symphony of deep blues and dazzling whites, sparkling in a sea of turbulent waves. We experience the 'twelves' as they slice dramatically through the tumultuous waters in their quest for the final marker. Once again, LeRoy Neiman has brilliantly captured the high stakes of world competition.
