about this piece
Sunday Silence, basking in the glow of yesterday's Kentucky Derby win, was once the hot potato nobody wanted, for he was the most unlikely of heroes.
He was foaled on March 26, 1986, a dark, almost black bay, weedy weanling. By Thanksgiving he lay dying of a bad case of diarrhea.
In the spring of 1987, three important California trainers came to look at him, and all three said he would never make it to the track, he was too cowhocked. At the yearling sale that summer, the bidding on him was so low Arthur Hancock, who raised the colt, bought him for $17,000.00 and immediately offered him back to Oakcliff Stable. They refused saying, "We don't want him. Our advisor doesn't like him." SO Hancock owned the horse.
Nine months later Hancock tried to sell him in a California sale, where he failed to sell, and on his return to Kentucky, his van driver suffered a heart attack, the van rolled over. Although badly bruised, Sunday Silence had cheated dealth again.
On this cold and wet day in May, the old man Whittingham, and his cowhocked colt that nobody wanted were given the brush off by a Derby crowd that had hoped to see the flashy East Goer crowned the hero. But when Easy Goer faltered in the mud, the heroes of the 115yj Kentucky Derby were the odd couple of Sunday Silence and his aging trainer Charlie Whittingham.
