President Abraham Lincoln's 2nd Inaugural Address
March 4, 1865


Weeks of inclement winter weather had turned the earthen thoroughfares of Washington into a quagmire. Nevertheless, on a blustery day in early March, thousands braved the mud and mire of Pennsylvania Avenue to hear the much-anticipated words of a president who had presided over the darkest years in our nation's history.

Under leaden skies, with the scarcely completed Capitol Dome as his backdrop, Abraham Lincoln stepped toward a podium to deliver the second inaugural address of his presidency.

His words did not exalt the Union, nor did they vilify the South. Instead, his brief, yet august speech implored a weary, war-torn nation to seek divine solace in their cherished commonalities: the love of family and faith. Concise though it may have been, this oration is considered by many to be Lincoln's finest address. In part he intoned:

With malice toward none; with charity for all; with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in; to bind up the nation's wounds; to care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan -- to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace, among ourselves. And with all nations.These words came as a soothing balm to a country crippled by years of unspeakable loss and tragedy, but more heartbreak was yet to come. Little more than a month later, Lincoln would lay mortally wounded in the balcony of a darkened theater, felled by the bullet of an assassin. Arguably, history would know no greater president. For although a shadowy gunshot sought to silence Lincoln's once-great voice, his cherished words will live brightly on forever.In his latest work, Don Stivers has created his interpretation of the only known photograph of Abraham Lincoln delivering a speech, complete with John Wilkes Booth looking on.
