about this piece
Don Stivers First at Normandy
At 0630 hours on June 6, 1944, precisely at H-Hour, the first Allied soldiers landed on the beaches of Normandy and the invasion to liberate Europe had begun.
The Soldiers landing at Utah Beach were all members of the 8th Infantry Regimental Combat Team commanded by Colonel James A. Van Fleet and assigned to the 4th Infantry Division. The 8th Infantry Regiment was the 'First at Normandy' and continually fought throughout the European Campaign until the war's end.
The Regiment received its first Presidential Unit Citation for its actions on Utah Beach and repeatedly distinguished itself in subsequent engagements, especially during the bloody hedgerow fighting marking the Allied breakout from Normandy beachhead and during the Battle of Hurtgen Forest.
In a storied history dating from the Mexican-American War to current operations in support of the War on Terrorism, this was quite possibly the Regiment's finest hour.
