The late afternoon light in this painting was very appealing to me because it both enhanced and emphasized the rich reddish gold tones of the horses coats, and the corresponding dark shadows lent contrast, shape and depth to their moving forms. The overall mood I wanted to be one of warmth and relaxation as the horses are in no real hurry as they trot down the path through the sunlight.
