Sunday Hitch, The Stall and Recitation are characteristic of a group of fine art prints Charles Peterson has done that intertwine a solid, realistic image with a translucent, ghostly one. Many of these have been reproduced and are known as The Memories Collection.
These paintings are like a layered puzzle. First you see the tractor, school desk, old tugboat, whatever it is. Then as I encourage the viewer to move through the painting - using a road, or fence or ray of light - he becomes aware of the spectral figures, the images of people whose lives once connected with these places. This awareness produces a new compositional force; a shifting sense of balance and interest. Artistically it's a challenge he enjoys.
