Kardu

Artist Biography

Kardu was born in Bali, Indonesia in 1960. His extraordinary talent for detail developed early. The young Kardu spent hours rendering meticulous ink drawings of Balinese life and the natural world around him.

Though Kardu worked in the rice fields out of necessity, art filled his leisure hours. For years, working without assistants in his home in the middle of the verdant rice fields, Kardu created large canvases covered with minute detail for local galleries and collectors.

His technique developed out of the centuries old temple ornamentation of Bali. Richly detailed scenes are drawn, shaded, and perfected with simple brushes made by the artist from freshly cut bamboo. Color is introduced only after the scene is completed. Although the colors traditionally consist of an earthy palette of natural dyes and resins, Kardu has recently expanded his palette to include the full natural spectrum.
