Walter Firle

Professor Walter Firle, born in Breslau on August 22, 1859, was originally destined for a business career but he began to paint art, prints and posters and attended the Academy in Munich, studying under Gabl, and Lofftz.

Undertaking study trips to Venice and Holland, Firle eventually settled in Munich. On his canvases, most of which are characterized by a gloomy atmosphere, he combined open-air paintings with a keen study of the human physiognomy.

His more important art, prints and posters, which have become popular through magazine illustrations include The Two Orphans, and Sunday School.
