Ron Tarver was born in Ft. Gibson, Oklahoma in 1957. He received a B.A. in Journalism and Graphic Arts at Northeastern Oklahoma State University. In 1983, he joined the staff at The Philadelphia Inquirer, where he continues to work and earn honors for his photo journalism.
Tarver's photographs explore his love of nature, a longing for home, and mysteries of the nighttime urban landscape. He has devoted much of his professional career to the documentation of the African American experience. In 1993 he received a grant to explore the lives of modern day African American cowboys. He was also co-author of a book published by HarperCollins, We Were There: Voices of African American Veterans from World War II to Iraq.
Tarver lives in Philadelphia, where he loves to cook Sunday dinner for his wonderful family - Riley, Wes, Michaela and Kristin.
