Richard Brandes

Artist Biography

Born in Oklahoma, Richard Brandes majored in painting and drawing while working toward a degree in fine art and attending numerous workshops. According to Brandes, it was perhaps the landscapes of Oklahoma in his childhood, "bright reds and greens brightened by rain, in contrast to the earth,' that stayed in his memory and inspired his art, prints and posters the most.

It is this observation of change and perception of activity, found in even the commonplace, that has carried over into his art, prints and posters. Fascination shapes and colors arrange themselves into intricate spatial relationships in his paintings. There is an evolution in the mind of the viewer as the eye takes in the enormous energy of colors and forms and shapes them into a landscape of surprising beauty and serenity.

"If there was any one thing I would like conveyed in a painting I do, it would be a ‘sense' of action or the ‘act' of painting.” The artist explains, "When I say painting is my profession, then I want the viewer to sense that action…only then, is the painting successful.”
