Lyonel Laurenceau

Lyonel Laurenceau was born in Haiti on January 10, 1942. He studied at the School of Fine Arts, the Hall of Plastic Arts, the Palace of Fine Arts in Haiti and later at the ABC school in Paris. In 1966, he won the first prize at the New York World's Fair for his art, prints and posters. He has spent the last thirty years in Laval, Quebec, where he studies and analyzes the blossoming of the human psyche to better pursue art.

From his native land Lyonel Laurenceau has borrowed symbols and metaphors which he incorporates in his art, prints and posters. Laurenceau uses mysticism, romanticism, fantasy and symbolism. He favors certain colors- he associates blue with calmness and serenity, red with joy or passion. In his creative world we can distinguish three main levels of activity: a) The manual or plastic such as the application of light, colors and symbols; b) the visual- the exterior reality seen by one and all representing the objective viewpoint of the artist; and c) the mental – his interpretive skill, talent ability-gift: what is inside the subject that emerges on the canvas.

Without knowledge of Lyonel Laurenceau's art, prints and posters, there is a chance that one could miss the point of what he's saying. One should know that forms, signals, and symbols are used to interpret the spiritual language of the painter. The strong interest in his painting is not simply because of the "plastique" appeal, but especially because of the rich subjectivity Laurenceau brings to each work: his rendering of life's paradoxes, confrontations between the emotional and the logical, the real and the illusory and his constant search for truth. Georges S. Nader, the founder of Nader's art galleries has scented Laurenceau's talent. He has promoted his art all around the world and today Lyonel Laurenceau is a renowned and appreciated painter internationally. His art is sought for major private collections and hangs in numerous museums around the world.
