Jill Tishman, a native of San Francisco, began her career in philosophy. She graduated from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana with a BA in English and a Masters in Philosophy. She taught ethics and social and political theory at both University of Wisconsin in Madison and Ball State University. By 1989 she had returned to San Francisco to pursue art and study at the San Francisco Art Institute.
Tishman's work often portrays trees and pathways that symbolize life's myriad journey. "I am an artist who paints landscapes because the earth is my first love. When I'm in nature, I never feel alone -- I always feel the presence of a spiritual force. My paintings rarely include people, because the presence of a human seems to take away from my communication with nature. I want the viewer to experience the passion and energy of a storm, or the threat of a natural disaster.”
Tishman lives with her husband in Santa Fe, where her spacious studio along the rocky hills of Hyde Park Road leaves her ample space to create large scale art. She continues to study art at the Santa Fe Institute of Art and enjoys taking dance classes and performing in dance recitals.
