Jenny Nelson

Jenny Nelson early artistic training was focused on the classical and representational. After attended Maine College of Art and graduating with a BFA from Bard College, she received a scholarship to Lacoste School of the Arts in France. Soon her natural instincts lead her to depict her subjects in abstract forms. Most of her paintings evolve as an intuitive reaction to her surroundings, be it interior space or landscape.

"To evoke this kind of sensory memory in my work I apply many layers of paint, using gesture, both conscious and unconscious, as well as my internal color sense. Traces of previous layers will remain visible, allowing colors to interact in ways I could not have anticipated. With great sensitivity to these evolving colors and forms, a very personal abstract language emerges.”

Nelson focuses her work on a particular shape or composition over a long period of time, resulting in a series of closely related paintings. "The paintings are an ongoing process of addition and subtraction until everything on the canvas coexists with a depth and intensity that seems balanced to me.”

For the past 15 years Nelson has been living and working in Woodstock, New York. Since November 2004 she has been a full time Artist in Residence at the Byrdcliffe Art Colony, where Dana Gioia, Chairman of The National Endowments for the Arts, and Congressman Maurice Hinchey have made a special visit to Nelson's studio to view her works during their tour of the Hudson Valley.
