Dennis Schmidt

Artist Biography

Dennis Schmidt has been painting since 1972. He worked as a welder and machinist from 1966 until 1976 when he left to embark on his full-time career as an artist. By 1979, the demand for his originals so exceeded supply that producing limited edition art prints and posters was the next logical step. From 1979 to 1990, thirty-one Limited Editions of his work were published and all have since sold out.

In his 28 years as a professional artist, Mr. Schmidt is the recipient of many awards for his art, prints and posters. Among these are numerous Best of Show, Gold and Silver Medals, eight consecutive popular choice awards at the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame as well as several Artist awards from his peers. From 1984 -1990, Dennis Schmidt served as Vice President of the Texas Association of Professional Artists (T.A.P.A.-which included such notable artists as Bob Wygant, Robert Summers, G. Harvey and Joe Grandee). He was featured in the book "Contemporary Western Artists” and has been interviewed for numerous publications including feature articles in "Southwest Art Magazine” and "The State of Art.” In 1978, Schmidt was the first artist ever honored with a one-man show at the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame; prior to ‘78 they were all multi-artist events.

His art, prints and posters are currently available at galleries in Scottsdale, AZ and Jackson, WY and Dallas, TX. He participates in the Annual Cheyenne Frontier Days Governor's Invitational as well as the Great American Artists Exhibition and Sale in Terrace Park Cincinnati, OH; the Gilcrease Museum Miniatures Show in Tulsa, OK; the Settlers West Gallery Miniatures Show in Tucson, AZ; Mountain Oyster Club Show in Tucson, AZ and the Museum of Western Art Annual Round Up in Kerrville, TX.
