James Bama

Artist Biography

James Bama

It took a strange set of circumstances to create the leading interpreter of today's west out of a New Yorker who had never seen the west until he was forty years old. Drawing inspiration from Flash Gordon and Tarzan, Bama began drawing as a young boy.

After leaving the Army late in WW II, Bama had a 22 year career as a commercial artist, working for such accounts as Coca Cola, General Electric and Ford, and his art, prints and posters appeared in The Saturday Evening Post, Argosy, and Reader's Digest.

Bama often photographs a subject up to 50 times, to capture detail or alternative lighting, and the finished art, print or poster is often perceived to be a photograph. Welcome to the world of Bama, where the faces of yesterday's and today's west meet.
